I will not miss the following:

The smell – walking down the street you can just get hit by awful smells. The open sewers (klongs) are rancid.

Driving on the wrong side – they wonder why there are so many road accidents in Thailand? I’ll tell you one major reason! People drive down the wrong side of the road. They are too lazy to go a little further and do a U-turn so instead they drive on the inside lane on the WRONG side. In the dark it is very difficult cause you just see a white light coming from where it shouldnt be coming from!

Dogs – I hate the stray dogs in THailand. They always chase me even though I am just minding my own business. They are crazy! Most of them are flea infested and completely disease ridden. In my opinion they should put most of them down. They are a danger to society and expecially when they get together in packs. I even bought a battery operated dog repeller that emits a high pitched sound that only dogs can hear. It works but sometimes they are still persistent and want to take a chunk out of my arse.

What? Yes, the lack of English here is unreal. Most people cannot speak at all. What is even more scary is that the educated Thais are still bad at conversing in English. THey may be able to read and write quite proficiently but when it comes to having a chat they just freeze up.

Lies – to Thai lies are a part of life. They are a way to save face. Face is the most important thing. So if you have to lie to save face then that is good. When I was being brought up I was taught that lies are BAD, BAD, BAD. Not in Thailand!

Pavements/sidewalks/footpaths – or more specifically the lack of them. And whatever footpaths there are they are in awful condition – its like trying to get through an obstacle course. If you have kids and a push chair – forget it!

Cops & bribes – yes they are corrupt. Very corrupt and that is scary. They dont get paid much and therefore they supplement their income by imposing fines at every available opportunity. Farangs are always their favourte targets as they are likely to extract more money from us. Once I refused to pay and ended up in the police station for almost an entire day and even paid more than the cop was asking for!

Prostitution – its everywhere – if you know what to look for. Its there. Its part of Thailand. Its not just the foreigners that get involved in prostitution – the Thais are very happy to avail of the services on offer. Even the most remote village in Thailand will have a karaoke bar that is really a knocking joint.

Hawkers – these guys can be annoying. Some of them are persistent and just keep going at you. Most of the time if you speak to them in THai they just move on.

Traffic – especially in Bangkok. It can take a while to get used to it but after a while I started to enjoy it and used it as a way to relax. I just listened to music and bopped away in my car. Other drivers would look at me and think I was mad. But if you have to be somewhere then there is nothing as annoying as being stuck at a traffic light for 15 minutes without it changing. One time I even saw that the counter was counting UP and not down for when the lights would change!

Mozzies – I hate them but they love me. They are the MOST ANNOYING thing in the entire world. THey drive me mad. I have stayed up at night chasing them around my bedroom. The sound of their buzzing in your ear is the worst sound ever!

People staring – they are not shy to stare and if you have a Thai girlfriend then their curiosity increases!

Shits – the runs – diaorrhea. This one time, at band camp, I had the worst shits. Actually I ended up in hospital once cause I passed out from shitting too much! I kid u not!

Rubbish – for such a beautiful country there is rubbish everywhere. Plastic bags are used for everything and I think it would be a great idea if they introduced the same law in Ireland that taxes plastic bags. I doubt if they will introduce this though.I even had a letter printed in the Bangkok Post about this but I think they have bigger problems to solve!

Noise pollution – just walking around a shopping centre you can be bombarded with noise from every angle. Sales girls trying to flog some new invention.I wish they would just stand there and say nothing. Most of them are gorgeous but once they start waffling on I just walk away.

General pollution – SMOG and all sorts of pollution are everywhere. It is a very dirty country and the fact that the Thais dont even see the rubbish themselves means that it will not be cleaned up for a long time.

Dual Pricing – yes there are 2 prices – one for Thais and one for foreigners. You can guess which is higher!
